Launching Game Experiences

Dev Blog WE 29/11/2014

Welcome back to our second DevBlog.

Note: We have three games currently in production at different stages for the sake of this blog, until the games have been announced in more detail, they will be called Project A, B and C.

Week in Summary

It’s been a productive but difficult week. Working full time is one of the biggest distractions for any indieDev, it can be energy sapping and leave you just wanting to “Relax”. Of course this is also quite destructive to the game creation process as you sometimes can tread water until you recover a basic level of energy. This week I’ve got quite a bit completed and only really had two off days, being Wednesday where I fell asleep on the sofa playing AC Unity and Friday where I also did very little. Have been playing Farcry 4 on and off through-out the week to relax, it’s an awesome game :)

It has mainly been about Project B this week, as I am close to getting match funding for this project and will need to get something substantial completed by Feb/March in terms of a prototype. I hope to go to kickstarter for this project, so I will need to get a game that has many of the elements in it ready by the time this goes live on KS.I don’t think you can go to Kickstarter without a prototype, I think that it’s moved forward since the original “I’ve got an idea” where people would back something on an idea and now needs real substance, especially after a number of high profile failures. Backers are becoming more cautious (which is no surprise), but it’s also a problem where big named designers and companies are squeezing out the indie guys/gals and so they have to provide more to get people on board.

Time-Spent

This week has definitely seen very good progress on Project B, and that’s where most of my focus has been this week. I do need to go back to Project A shortly as I have some friends who will be doing some art on it, and it would be good to move it forward.

  • Set-up XLS spreadsheet for time tracking (to add to the Blog).
  • Sorted out project documentation and put it in project related folders.
  • Worked on Project A designs.
  • Worked on Project B designs.
  • Documentation administration for some free art/design support that was provided by the Serious Games Studio.
  • Thinking about how UI elements would need to change to support tablet, PC and VITA resolutions.
  • Created a big list of locations that the player can visit in Project B.
  • Added new idea/concept to Project B’s designs for group dynamics, people working together and what happens when people disagree and move on.
  • Started creating a screen mockup of the group dynamics screen.

Software/Purchases

None this week, but was looking at upgrading Parallels. As I run a Mac and run Windows 8 for development as a virtual machine, the new version is apparently more efficient and I may have to upgrade to improve performance of developing on Windows. Was also doing more investigations on what software tools I will be making the various games on. Project B is going to have to work on Vita, while Project C is going to be Windows/Mac/Tablet.
